IATF 16949 2nd Edition
The 2nd edition is being written from stakeholder feedback. IATF’s published priorities are simplification, clarity, and efficiency — while keeping the scheme effective — plus better handling of customer-specific requirements.
When it changed — or when it will
IATF Stakeholder Communiqué SC-2026-005 (July 2026) describes Revision 2 as in working-draft development during 2026, with final validation and supporting documents in 2027 and publication planned for mid-2027. Those dates remain indicative.

When certification to the new edition is required
IATF has said the end of the 2nd-edition transition will be aligned with the end of the ISO 9001:2026 transition. Until IATF publishes the binding rules, keep the 2016 edition and current Sanctioned Interpretations current, and do not assume a date earlier than the ISO 9001 window without written IATF confirmation.
How the standard is changing
- Priority 1: simpler language and a standard that is easier to implement and audit without losing effectiveness.
- Further priorities address evolving automotive needs identified by stakeholders, including how common customer-specific requirements might be recognized more cleanly.
- Because IATF 16949 sits on ISO 9001, the 2nd edition will need to work with ISO 9001:2026 once that edition is published.
- Clause-level text is not final. Treat current public summaries as direction, not as audit criteria.
Transitioning
Until the 2nd edition is published, certification, surveillance, and recertification continue against IATF 16949:2016 and the current Rules and Sanctioned Interpretations. After publication, IATF will define when new audits must use the 2nd edition and when 2016 certificates end.
Timing that fits the organization
Automotive customers still require the 2016 edition. Organizations that need IATF access should not pause implementation. When Revision 2 is issued, some suppliers will move at the next recertification; others will use the full IATF window. Both are legitimate once the rules are published.
