ISO 9001:2026 Quality Management Systems
ISO 9001:2026 is expected to keep the Harmonized Structure and add clearer expectations on quality culture, ethical conduct, and how digital tools and climate context show up in the QMS. It is not a 2015-scale redesign.
When it changed — or when it will
ISO/TC 176/SC 2 has stated that the FDIS was approved and that the sixth edition is scheduled for publication on 16 September 2026. ISO’s project record still lists September 2026, so treat the exact day as committee-confirmed rather than already on the shelf.

When certification to the new edition is required
A formal IAF / Global ACI transition deadline has not been published as of August 2026. Recent ISO management-system revisions, including ISO 14001:2026, have used a three-year window. Until the mandatory document is issued, plan as if you will have about three years after publication — and lock the date with your certification body once the rules are out.
How the standard is changing
- Stronger emphasis on quality culture and ethical behaviour, with clearer leadership accountability.
- Climate and other relevant external issues belong in context and interested-party analysis where they affect the QMS.
- More explicit attention to digitalization and how electronic processes and data are controlled.
- Alignment with the latest Harmonized Structure, which helps organizations that already run ISO 14001 or ISO 45001 alongside ISO 9001.
- Compared with the 2015 rewrite, the volume of new requirements is expected to be moderate.
Transitioning
After publication, organizations typically update context, leadership, documented information, and a small set of processes, then take the revised system through an internal audit and a registrar transition audit. Many will do that work at the next surveillance or recertification rather than as a standalone event.
Timing that fits the organization
Some companies will implement the 2026 text as soon as it is published so customers and leadership see a current system. Others will wait until their audit cycle or the official transition close date requires it. Either path is sound when it is deliberate, scheduled with the registrar, and backed by a gap analysis.
