ISO 9001:2026 Quality Management Systems
ISO 9001:2026 keeps the familiar 10-clause Harmonized Structure and process approach. It is an update of 2015, not a 2015-scale redesign. The published differences are quality culture and ethical behaviour, a clearer split between risks and opportunities, stronger change control, climate folded into context, and a rewritten Annex A that explains intent.
When it changed — or when it will
ISO 9001:2026 was published on 16 September 2026. It is the sixth edition and replaces ISO 9001:2015, including the February 2024 climate-change amendment. ISO 9001:2015 certificates remain recognized during the transition.

When certification to the new edition is required
Global ACI has not yet published a binding transition end date. Recent ISO management-system revisions, including ISO 14001:2026, have used a three-year window. Plan as if ISO 9001:2015 certificates will remain recognized into September 2029 — and lock the date with your certification body once the official rules are out.
How the standard is changing
- Quality culture and ethical behaviour are now explicit leadership duties (clause 5.1), with matching awareness in 7.3 and the environment for the operation of processes in 7.1.4. A signed policy is not enough.
- Risks and opportunities are separated in clause 6.1 (sub-clauses 6.1.1–6.1.3). Opportunities need their own actions, not a spare column on the risk log.
- Change management in clause 6.3 is reinforced: plan changes to the QMS and review whether they achieved the intended result.
- Climate change is in the main text of clause 4.1 — the same determination required by the 2024 amendment, including when climate is not relevant. It is not a new climate-management system.
- The standard uses the current Harmonized Structure, which helps organizations that already run ISO 14001 or ISO 45001 alongside ISO 9001.
- Annex A is expanded informative guidance on structure, terminology, and the intent of requirements. It does not add requirements. Annex B (the old list of related standards) was removed.
- Clause 10.1 consolidates continual improvement. Annex A notes that improvement can come from context, risks, opportunities, and the adoption of technologies — without creating a separate digitalization clause.
- Compared with the jump from 2008 to 2015, the volume of new requirements is moderate. Most operational clauses carry forward.
Transitioning
Typical work is a gap against the published 2026 text, then updates to context, leadership evidence, risk and opportunity records, change control, awareness, and a few procedures. Follow that with an internal audit and a registrar transition audit — usually at the next surveillance or recertification, not as a standalone event. New implementations should be written to ISO 9001:2026 now, not to a 2015 system that will need a second upgrade.
Timing that fits the organization
Some companies will transition at the next convenient audit so customers and leadership see a current system. Others will use the full window and move when the certificate cycle makes it practical. Both are acceptable when the decision is written down, scheduled with the registrar, and backed by a gap review against the published text.
